Biography

Dr. Ma's lab has been working on neural circuits critical for sensing pain and itch. The first phase of his research (1999-2014) is to determine the genetic programs that control the development of somatic sensory circuits. Major contributions include the identification of i) Neurogenin1 that controls genesis of peripheral nociceptors, ii) Runx1 that controls the expression of many sensory channels and receptors responding to painful or pruritic stimuli, and iii) Tlx3 that controls the formation of dorsal spinal excitatory neurons that transmit pain- and itch-related information to the brain. The second phase research (2010-present) is to map spinal circuits that process distinct somatic sensory modalities, using innovative intersectional genetic strategies.
